As you may know, I love this place in the middle of Utah’s Salt Lake. It’s a place the great hairy beasts can call home. And it’s the closest place there is where you have a good chance of seeing any. They’re descended from the only ones that hadn’t crossbred with the cattle the Spanish brought, the only purebreds left after Buffalo Bill. It’s just lucky that a few enviro types put a dozen or so on the Island when it looked like they were finished, and now there are about 600.

Some people have even talked about letting them populate the plains again. I wouldn’t mind that at all. Sine’s even put in a link about it. Don’t worry; it doesn’t bite.

They got the dozen or so from Yellowstone that’s about five hours farther north, but it’s harder to find them there since it’s so big and bison aren’t as numerous as once upon a time. If somebody just wants to see what they’re like, there are now a few at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge that you pass heading to the airport from downtown Denver. So that’s an easy one if you’re over there. Or, if you’re going to Taos, Ted Turner’s Vermejo Park Ranch has a bunch, but they’re hard to find too since his ranch is almost as big as the state of Rhode Island. But if you’ve got deep pockets, it’s just a little north east of Taos Ski Valley.

They say bison meat is better for you than beef. But, that's okay. I am not missing anything. I never had it. China has no bison. Friends tell me Mongolia Yak is related to bison, though I never have Yak, either. Bison went back and forth over Bering Sea land bridge for long time till bridge under water.
